The Homestead Tour - Broadway, Virginia
By appointment ~ Three Historic Sites
Travel North to Broadway, Virginia along scenic Rt. 42. Situated east of the Allegheny mountain range, the Town of Broadway is approximately 12 miles north of Harrisonburg. Set on a high ridge, the geographic features of the Broadway area made it useful to both the native Indians and European settlers.
Make time for a stop at the Breneman Turner Mill built in 1802 and operated into the 1900's. Saved from fire during the Sheridan's burning of the Valley, the restoration process and history is inspirational.
On the way to Broadway, stop at the Lincoln Homestead. "Virginia John" Lincoln and Rebecca Flowers Lincoln, President's Abraham Lincoln's Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother, moved to Rockingham County in 1768 from Pennsylvania.
The Elder John Kline Homestead re-tells the story of a Dunker (Brethren) minister farmer of the Broadway area who spoke out against slavery and secession prior to the Civil War. He requested exemption from military service for the Brethren and Mennonites whose faith prohibited them from bearing arms. As an herbal doctor, he frequently tended to the wounded of both the Union and Confederate armies. As Annual Meeting Moderator, he crossed battle lines to visit with the Brethren to the North and West.
Enjoy a homemade southern style supper before you depart the majestic mountains of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.
